It's so hard to make a firm statement on all of this. Some people just DJ better than others. Period. Whatever DJ'ing might be in this situation. Reading the crowd, picking tunes, adding in effects, maybe doing some turntableism. But I like to DJ as well. Not to be 'the next big star'. Nope. I just like to interact with the tracks that I love. I can enjoy listening to them, but it's so much fun to also play with them. It's a 'multifunctional' tool for me. And not just a thing to listen to (although in the end that's still what I do, but you get me).
In my opinion the problem is the 'age of the DJ', or maybe even better the 'age of the producer''. Where it is really easy to pick up DJ'ing/producing. While that's not a bad thing in the first place, the problem lies with the elitism and the random douchebags that think they can do anything better. But those douchebags picked up a guitar 10 years ago & did the same. The DJ is just the modern rockstar. Or at least the producer who is DJ'ing. That's how far EDM has changed 'in the minds of people'.
I kinda hate the statement 'EDM has changed'. No it hasn't. Everything there was is still there, and new stuff is being add. Some styles transform or evolve. Sometimes for the better, sometimes for worse. That's still a matter of opinion anyway. It's the people that change. And not only the listeners. Also the producers, and about anyone who has to do something with it. And in the modern 'electronic age' it's so much easier to rant. And although there are way more bedroom producers/DJ's now, I'm pretty sure they were always numerous. Modern communication just gives us the abbility to communicate. And this just gives us numbers to work with.
And I can understand how & why people are frustrated. Producing is our passion, or at least for most of the people who lurk here. And we are being overflooded with information. And that's just too hard to handle. And because of that we start putting up these little wars. I'm trying to just do what I do, and drop my interest in this sensational warfare. Although it's not easy. We keep getting flooded with information, and tunes, and plug-in here, tutorial there. It's hard to keep up. I can't actually wait to build a little studio, cut off all communications & sit around with some people. Make some magic. Like-minded people preferable.
Kinda getting off-topic, but I'm just sick & tired of these topics & discussions. Because these are being discussed on every music messageboard, and Facebook (which I luckely managed to rehab from), and so on. Even all the chats are being flooded. And everytime I mention 'I like to produce & DJ in my spare time', I get flooded with random opinions that are totally irrelative.
How about we just try & respect eachothers opinions, jobs, interests & musical preference. Whetever it be a genre, or a way of expressing your love of music.
(edit: typo's, although I see more, too lazy)
