your questions on how to get your music out there!!

Postby lolaberlin » Wed Apr 18, 2012 1:00 pm

Hey everyone,

I´m working on a course/tutorial for musicians/producers to learn how to
market themselves online and get their music out there using
all the new web services.

For this I´m trying to find out as much information as i can about
the questions most people have on this topic.. and their preferences.

So... girls&guyses...

how many of you are actually trying to get their music heard/out there
vs. those who are making music just for themselves?

When it comes to those who want a "career" /fulltime income / living their dream
what are your biggest frustrations at the moment?

Where do you feel you are left alone or clueless?

I think everyone on here would like his music "out there" at some point. I'm just not ready.

I think the worst, most arrogant and insensitive thing you can do as a producer/musician is to rush to the marketing phase... And I'm pretty sure those of us that both A. Think/know we're ready and B. Know how to market ourselves, wouldn't gain all that much from frequenting this forum in the first place.

Just a personal opinion.

so you reccon this forum is a place for people who want to learn how to start making music first and
then think about marketing it?

with the internet is very easy to put your music out there. contact labels, send promos, sell, give free stuff etc.

I don't see why not to market. everyone should know how to do it. specially those who want to be independent, like me.
you mean marketing = selling? if the music is not perfect yet, spread it for free.

if you want to be a conventional artist, just worry about making good music. send it to a popular label. be ready go to along with it, otherwise you wont benefit much.
they'll do the marketing for you.

I only like to play from time to time. just psy or psyprog!
having a fulltime career means obligations that I really don't want to, on any genre.
and playing the same tracks too often, cuts all the fun.. they lose their meaning. and is not exciting anymore. at least to me. that's why I'm not a dj.

being famous is good because of the income. but be ready to get unwanted attention... and leech people asking about your patches! :D

yeah, its the big question if living the dream is getting your music out there, heard , playing gigs or "making a living fulltime" ? Or all of them together - or none :)

I´m sometimes its really the classic be careful what you wish for situation... i know i have been making a living, played hundreds of shows every
year and "was out there" and still wasnt satisfied with all aspects of the career. I personally liked getting feedback to the music but no so much
the concerts/dj gigs while others LOVED the live shows and never frequented forums or answered emails.

Is there any question on how to properly use soundcloud, last fm and all the other "new" (or not so new) sound services to get your music
out there, or how to get into itunes/spotify/distribution channels? Or how to get press? or... i dunno.. Lol

usually living the dream includes all that.
when you love something, you don't think about it. you just do it.. and love every aspect of it. and you are ready to embrace all that comes and live the full experience.

personally I don't have dreams towards music, I just like being creative and learn. I don't feel compelled to be a performing musician/artist, otherwise I would be doing that in any way.. playing my music or other peoples music.

being famous?? too famous producers end up hanging out only with buddy producers friends, tour intensively and they get progressively more distant from the fans. not my thing.
I'm very analytical
