Question about USB ports and USB hubs?

Postby Disposable » Fri Jul 27, 2012 4:08 pm

So my question is quite simple, maybe even silly, but considering that my tech skills are on the same level of a dead amish I'll have to ask it anyway :)
I've recently been getting my hands on a bunch of controllers that I'd like to use both live and in studio/rehearsal, but my laptop only has a certain amount of ports for me to use, and is there any chance of problems or anything special I should keep in mind when trying to increase the number of ports, by for example using a USB hub?

Be sure to get a self powered hub though, because otherwise some of your controllers might not work properly. One usb port can only deliver so much power to your devices, so if you've got 5 or 6 set up that each need power, you're gonna get into trouble... ;-).

I'd recommend the belkin hubs, btw. They might be a little bit more expensive but it's definitely worth spending the extra buck - I've messed around with a couple of hubs now and some cheaper ones just didn't work properly. Very frustrating :). (also, check compatibility with your OS!)

i'm not even sure which one i have, but it's powered, has 7 slots, and works like a charm and my mom bought it for me for really cheap.

Well, in my experience, the first 2 ports in a hub will be able to give power, but you'll need to use the power adapter to get power to the other ports.
So if you just make sure you power each hub, you can have a TON of hubs strung together and it should still all work.
